While visiting many prefer to
visit the world famous wineries located here in the Sonoma Valley.
Some talked about wineries close to us are Chateau
St Jean, Ferrari-Carano,
Ledson Winery and
Vineyards or Domaine
Carneros. Some of are favorite wineries are Ledson
Winery and Vineyards and Domaine
Carneros noted for its sparkling wine. We also really enjoy some
of the many small, off the beaten path, family owned wineries such as
Larson
Family Winery, famous for their Three Lab Cab named after the
families dogs that lazily keep watch on the vineyards. Other
favorites include Wellington
Winery and Benziger
Family Winery noted for its organic/biodynamic approach to wine
making. Many wineries have free tasting available. Don't be afraid to
ask, “If we buy a bottle is the tasting free?” Another favorite
of ours is to take a day trip to Francis
Ford Coppola. Have breakfast here, then head north. Bring your
swimsuit and a change of nice clothes. Rent a cabana, lounge by the
pool all day and then enjoy dinner at the restaurant there that
includes some of Mr. Coppolas favorite dishes from around the world.
This is one you want to check on getting booked in advance, even
perhaps as soon as you book with us, because there is a waiting list
to eat at Mr Coppolas restaurant. For
a list of wineries close to General Vallejos Sanctuary click here.
At the end of a day wine tasting come home to General Vallejo's
Sanctuary for a pleasant rest.
Dining choices are just as varied and close to home. You might enjoy breakfast at The Big 3. It is Sonoma style at its best. Or maybe visit the truly classic Fremont Diner, famous for preparing meals with ingredients fresh from the on-site farm! Try a coffee break at the Sunflower Cafe on the square, Terri's Hot Shots off Arnold Drive or at the Barking Dog Coffee shop on Highway 12. For dinner out maybe you'll try The Girl and The Fig or Saddles Steakhouse for the best steak in town. We love drinks and desserts at The Swiss Hotel and gourmet pizzas at The Red Grape, both located on the Sonoma square. Maybe you just want to unwind at the laid back Murphy's Irish Pub or Hopmonk bar and grill. Rossi's BBQ, Beer & Dancehall is perfect for outdoor summer nights or indoor dancing. Try a sample of the variety of handcrafted beers offered at Lagunitas Beer Garden in Petaluma. A little further than ten minutes, but so worth it. In Glen Ellen for the day? For a quaint breakfast experience try the Garden Court Cafe. For lunch or dinner try The Yeti Restaurant , the Wolf House Restaurant, or the Glen Ellen Inn martini bar and oyster grill. Looking for a particular style of food? The Yeti Restaurant has awesome Nepalese and Indian food. Craving Italian fair? Cafe Citti has a delicious menu and even if you don't see it on the menu, they probably can make it. Ask to try their gnocchi. The original Mary's Pizza, that was started by Mary herself right here just blocks from the home, has wonderful gourmet pizzas and authentic Italian food, and they deliver. E-Saan Thai for Thai food and Rocket Sushi for Japanese. These are just a few of the variety of dining choices located 2 to 10 minutes from General Vallejos Sanctuary. Closest to home are Mikes Creekside Cafe (breakfast and lunch only), The Big 3, the Hot Box Grill, Rocket Sushi, Rossi's BBQ, Beer & Dancehall, the original Mary's Pizza, or E-Saan Thai.
Want to go where the locals go? Try the local Valley of the Moon Farmers Market on Tuesday evenings starting at five in the Sonoma square. Don't forget to bring your wine, picnic basket and blanket. Enjoy free entertainment and meet local merchants and farmers and enjoy their goods. Don't just be a visitor, but get a real feel for what life in Sonoma is like.
Does your relaxation mean outdoor activity? Hike the Sonoma Overlook Trail or visit the Jack London State Historic Park. If you prefer, plan a day to go to the California coast. Want to try spearfishing? How about diving for Red Abalone, A delicacy located no where else in the world but the California coast?
If you want to spend some time on the coast be sure to look into renting our sister cabin, Robin's Nest, in the famous Sea Ranch.
